Australian Fashion Designers—A Force to be Reckoned with, Mate.

Although fashion plays an important role in merging global ideas and creativity, focusing on a particular region can breathe fresh life into the design process.
The rich history of Italian design, the colorful influence of South America, the elegance of Parisian fashion, the brave voice of US tastemakers—all play an important role—all should be celebrated.

Australia is a country with a unique global view due to its close proximity to Asia, strong ties to Europe, and an indigenous people rich in culture

An unpredictable climate, vast open spaces, wildlife unique to no other land, the Australian perspective is distinctly autonomous.
There is a fierce independence evident in Australian design.
Much like the strength of the Australian surf or the harsh beauty of the outback, Australian designers are a global force to be reckoned with.

These are three of my favourite.

Established in 1982, Lisa Ho began her label one year after graduating from fashion school in Sydney. Well-known by Australians, she earned greater international recognition at the Sydney 2000 Olympics Opening Ceremony when honoured for her important role in Australian fashion. Lisa Ho has been worn by celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Tyra Banks and Elle Macpherson. Her designs are luxurious, flattering and feminine with a distinctively modern, yet timeless edge.

Just 20 years young, Zimmermann is perhaps one of the better known Australian labels internationally. Sisters Simone & Nicky Zimmermann founded the business as a high-fashion swim and resort wear line. Since that time Zimmermann has evolved into ready-to-wear and is best known for its sophisticated yet bohemian style. Zimmermann is found in boutiques internationally including Net-a-Porter, The Outnet, Covetish as well as their own online shop.

The irrefutable design chemistry between Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales is undeniable, recognized even by John Galliano with whom they each declined an internship. Embracing an appreciation for Australian kitsch and dedication to complex silhouettes, Romance Was Born was created. A decade on, the twosome continue to kick down the doors of fashion convention with their brazen and unrestrained interpretation of style. Their loyal celebrity following includes Cyndi Lauper, Lily Allen and Cate Blanchett among others.
