Not Your Granny's Crochet Project!

Growing up I was fortunate enough
to have my fair share of hand crocheted
scarves, dresses, tops and capes.
In fact, my grandmother taught me how to crochet...twice.
My mother once.
It didn't stick.
So revisiting this hot trend today, well,
it's right up my yarn store!

New Romantics Crochet Variety Dress at Free People, $250
Same deal as above but in black...cool, right?

The options are so diverse at the moment, there is
something out there for everyone. There are also warnings that come with crocheted clothing.

People Tree Crochet Dress at Asos, $240US
First, beware overdoing the hippie look.
It works well to throw in something a bit edgy or modern—style it with contemporary accessories and shoes.

Second, beware excessive or unintended exposure
(the dreaded nip-slip). A sexy camisole or slip
goes a long way with crochet work!

Lastly, make sure it fits...too small and you can look like a sausage roll, too big and you might look like you're channeling a long-gone 60s rock star.

Fair Harven Crochet Dress from General Pant Co, approximately $150US
Heirloom Dress from Funktional at Need Supply Co, $173US

If it's all a bit too much, go for something like
the above look from Need Supply—a less committed,
but completely hip version.
Or opt for a simple crochet trim or accent like below.

Twist & Tango Crochet Insert Cami Dress at Asos, $120US

If your really lucky, you paid attention when
someone taught you how to crochet and you can
whip up your own perfect one-of-a-kind ensemble.

But, if you're anything like me, you'll need to suffice with spending your hard-earned dollars on one of these darlings.

Book Review: Harpers Bazaar Fabulous at Every Age

Harper’s Bazaar
Fabulous at Every Age your Quick & Easy Guide to Fashion
Nandini D’Souza & Jenny Barnett
Hearst Books, 189 pages

I was tackled and hog-tied by insomnia last night. In no doubt due to the multiple giant MUG-o-ramas of coffee I poured down my gullet late in the day. At 213am I woke up not only bright-eyed, but relatively bushy-tailed.

My brain, however, was unable to cope with reading anything with a plot and no identifiable amount of caffeine, desperation, or cash will get me to watch JerseyTrash or Kendra and her ilk on the tube.

So, I chose from the ever-multiplying teetering stack of style and fashion books I’m working my way through. Harper’s Bazaar Fabulous at Every Age
Your Quick & Easy Guide to Fashion.

My love for Harper’s Bazaar is long held. It was my first fashion magazine and remains one of
my absolute favorites

I blasted through this book in a little over an hour. I examined every page but spent most of my time studying my "age category." Sadly, I didn’t learn much. I formed an idea or two for a couple outfits, but I get that from an average magazine. I wouldn't consider it a "Guide"
or much of a How-to source.

It’s a beautiful book to look through, but unlike competing books in this genre, it is light on new information on age-appropriate style. Also disappointing is the lack of informational credits on designers or where to buy.

Unless you are after an expensive hardback magazine, I have found more helpful books in the category of fashion and personal style. I expect more from HB.

My Big Anti-Style Moment — Part 2

“What are you looking at? You’ve never seen a hypocrite before?” —Leonard, The Big Bang Theory

Stick Before...
I left off with me owning up to facing the knocking at the door...

To circumvent the drama of the madly barking dog, I ventured out the side door. And because it's snake season I grab my walking stick. And because just yesterday I broke my nice, slim snake-beatin’ stick, I temporarily replaced it with a stick that is less stick and more gnarled, thick, heavy branch as in the there-was-a-crooked-man nursery rhyme.
And, after.

The not-one-but-two well-dressed, articulate, handsome gentlemen both took an involuntary step back as I rounded the corner. Regaining their composure they informed me they were here to take a water sample (this happens twice a year—my slowpoke calculations eventually determined that yup...it’s about that time).
Not actually them, but you get the idea...

Of course there is an issue so I walk with them in their fancy khakis and ties, me a paint-and-banana-splattered-croc-wearing-branch-wielding hillbilly trying not to smile because all I can think is.....I ate kiwi with the skin on!!! I can feel fur and seeds stuck to my pearlies.

After much back and forth the mission is deemed unsuccessful and duo will return on Monday.

You know what’s going to happen, right? I don’t care if I wake up with a goiter and tubuerculosis.....I am going to look FABULOUS. I will hire a team if I have to but I will open the door glowing. And I will walk with them, across the gravel driveway and into the weedy, snake-infested meadow in kitten heels and pearls (I’m not really a pearl girl, but you get the point).

I need to read my own blog and take my own advice...it is an absolute necessity to look your very best every day even if your headache tells you otherwise. In fact, look for a TOP TEN on this very topic.
