Not Your Granny's Crochet Project!

Growing up I was fortunate enough
to have my fair share of hand crocheted
scarves, dresses, tops and capes.
In fact, my grandmother taught me how to crochet...twice.
My mother once.
It didn't stick.
So revisiting this hot trend today, well,
it's right up my yarn store!

New Romantics Crochet Variety Dress at Free People, $250
Same deal as above but in black...cool, right?

The options are so diverse at the moment, there is
something out there for everyone. There are also warnings that come with crocheted clothing.

People Tree Crochet Dress at Asos, $240US
First, beware overdoing the hippie look.
It works well to throw in something a bit edgy or modern—style it with contemporary accessories and shoes.

Second, beware excessive or unintended exposure
(the dreaded nip-slip). A sexy camisole or slip
goes a long way with crochet work!

Lastly, make sure it fits...too small and you can look like a sausage roll, too big and you might look like you're channeling a long-gone 60s rock star.

Fair Harven Crochet Dress from General Pant Co, approximately $150US
Heirloom Dress from Funktional at Need Supply Co, $173US

If it's all a bit too much, go for something like
the above look from Need Supply—a less committed,
but completely hip version.
Or opt for a simple crochet trim or accent like below.

Twist & Tango Crochet Insert Cami Dress at Asos, $120US

If your really lucky, you paid attention when
someone taught you how to crochet and you can
whip up your own perfect one-of-a-kind ensemble.

But, if you're anything like me, you'll need to suffice with spending your hard-earned dollars on one of these darlings.

What's Old is New Again...Part One

There is nothing better than a dress that looks like it was inherited—passed down through the generations.

Authentic vintage clothing is amazing, however, my heart beats even faster for a dress that looks retro, but is indeed....brand new!

Here are some beauties that make
my heart skip a beat.

Off the Stands—A Monthly Magazine Review

May 2011
Cosmopolitan
Shop til you Drop
Harpers Bazaar

Most women are too time poor to flip through even one fashion magazine a month, let alone several. Welcome to Off the Stands, a monthly magazine review featuring reviews of a selection of fashion magazines currently on the stands.

As an avid reader, shopper and blogger, I dig through the month’s magazines and pull out the highlights—saving you time and money.

This month, three trends are reported in multiple mags— velvet making a resurgence, patterned pants are coming on strong and (my personal fave)...the color orange as  a must-have!

Cosmopolitan cosmopolitan.com.au

D
Leather Bottoms Abound —especially shorts!
D Capes in various forms are a MUST! Long, short, solid, patterned, simple, embellished
D Something new and fun? Go for the belted trench vest. Hip & happening!
D It's a Ruffle Revolution! Find them on tops, skirts, sleeves, hemlines...everywhere.

Shop til you Drop shoptilyoudrop.com.au

D The entire May issue is dedicated to online shopping! Whoop WHOOP!
D Trend alert — the Peter Pan collar. Not sure about this one...tread carefully!
D Loungewear as daywear. Upstyled trackies & sweats? Hhmmm...
D Love the workwear section with lots of helpful how-to's for different career vibes.
D Diggin’ the navy and kahki color combo recommendation accented with gray.
Tres chic!

Set Sail with Nautical Dresses

Let me first say, I'm not a big fan of the nautical look.
It is a style that can go very wrong, very easily.
I shudder to think leaving home resembling
Mrs Howell or Muffy Regatta Queen of the Seas.

About $70US ModCloth's All for Nautical Dress

When considering the nautical look, I say
 Be Ye Warned!
There's a fine line between looking ship-shape
and being made to walk the plank.

Elwood Hardline Vintage Black & White Stripe Knit Dress, $90AU at Surf Stitch

I think this collection of dresses is dreamy.
And although they might fit loosely into a nautical theme,
my hope is that all of you Dressologists
make the look your own

Milly Lace-up Cotton Blend from The Outnet on sale now

Throw overboard any notion of navy blazers with gold buttons, penny loafers and straw hats.
Instead go full speed ahead with the unexpected

Secret Squirrel Lagoon Halter Dress at BirdMotel about $185AU

Combine with fitted leather jacket, leggings, bedazzled sky-high stilettos or chunky ankle boots
You get the picture! Think Anti-Sailor Sailor...

Sexy Printed Cotton Caftan, Victoria's Secret, $59US

Zing some bold personal style into it and
you will avoid looking like a prop on Gilligan's Island and
instead will be ready for smooth sailing ahead.

Forever 21 Navy & Gray T-shirt Dress, $17US

Kate Sylvester Fredrica Dress at Fashion Artiste $142AU

Thankfully I'm well-and-truly out of
horrible seafaring cliches...
Ahoy, Matey.

Maxi Skirt LOVE, Maxi Dress...not so much

Confession time...I loathe the maxidress.
I cannot wait for the trend to go away. It is, in my opinion,
the modern-day muumuu.
There have been too many examples
of the maxi dress worn badly for too many seasons
and it has made me maxi-bitter.

Not every trend should be embraced by every one...

AAAhhhhhhhh......Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

That said, can I please share my unreasonable
affection for the maxi skirt? Yes, you need some height to carry it off, but I am in love x 1million.

Aiko Drawstring Maxi about $140US from Saks Fifth Avenue
Desert Florals Maxi Skirt at Free People about $95AU

Tube Maxi Skirt by KJ Kirrily Johnston $198AU at MyCatwalk.com
Rag & Bone Bequia at Saks about $511AU

The best advice I've seen on maxi skirts?
The look already has a Woodstock vibe,
so keep more city, less hippy.

I think another good tip is to
avoid solid black....it's just too heavy.

And unless you're approaching 6 feet tall, less than 100 pounds and often mistaken for a runway hottie, a fitted top (and if the season allows bare arms) are necessito to give the look some shape

I love when a trend surfaces that is completely wearable in day-to-day life.

And I am loving the colorblocking thing.
It's modern, youthful & fresh.

As always, the best way to work a trend is in a way that makes you feel
comfortable and contemporary.

Milly Imara Jacquard Dress at Nordstrom $420AU
